Apple or Dell.... Give me your thoughts....? I'm looking for speed, memory, dependability, easy use.

I store allot of photos, music, and documents....I want a great computer that will last me at least 2 years and keep up with the busy life I lead....

I have a 19 year old PowerBook that still works fine. It's a bit slow compared to the newer machines, but It still pops up and works. Dependable as the sunrise, easy to use and the newer Apple machines are even easier. As for speed, not so good, but it is elderly.

The PCs I've had rarely last longer than a few years. But really, the point is moot if all you want is tremendous storage for a few years. You can buy storage drives for that, without investing a huge amount of money, in either platform.

But, my little PowerBook I bought for undergraduate school in 1988 is still running strong.........

Bob Nelson.

I bought a Mac Air a year and a half ago. Terrible mistake. Slow. Apple controls its software universe pretty tightly.

If you're very concerned about internet security
the Apple is safer , not because it is
more protected but because Bill Gates
has a target painted on him by every hacker
in cyberspace .

That said , there are ways around this .
If you get a PC , do not use the installed
Internet Explorer . Get the Firefox browser .
Also , the newest opsys with PCs has a lot
better protection . Many people badmouth
the Vista Opsys . I find it a real improvement
if used correctly .

Then there are the issues that Bob brought up .
If you want to add software and/or hardware
there is no contest . The PC is your better choice .

I don't really know much about the ipod touch. However, I bought a 1st generation ipod nano four years ago and it still works like it did from day one. Last week I bought a new ipod nano (4th generation) and it's great. I only purchased a new one because the old one was a 2g unit. The new one is an 8g unit, a lot more room. They are both great products.

Though I am an artist, I prefer PC's. Hmmm, maybe it is because I am an artist. I've used my daughters Ap Lap and liked it just fine though much of the software I need was impossible to use. At least at the time. The problem I have is in pricing. Kinda why I prefer Rice Burners to Harleys. The former are working class the latter for lawyers, doktors or folks that only have two wheels for transport.

Hey, Tex! I'm glad to see that you frame Harleys and Apples in the same group. I have both. The Apple is 19 years old and the Harley is 12 years old, with 106,000 miles on it. I don't know how many miles are on the Apple, but it's been to Europe and I can't say that about the Harley.

Well, I've sat a Harley and like em jest fine. Except back when they were made by the bowlin ball guys. I've used my daughters Ap Lap and liked it just fine. They just aren't workin class priced. I've gotta 88 Honda Davidson that seems bullet proof. And quiet. Personally, I don't have a lap top. Hell, I don't even have a cell phone. Got an antique PC though. It doodles right along.

Every artist I know, ceptin me, has a Mac. Then again, I'm a paint, draw, eat vitamins kinda feller and do everything by hand so, no need.....

Glad to hear you've logged some serious combat touring miles on yer Harley.

    Ride Safe....

I had 2 Dell laptops. The first overheated. The second uses Vista (need I say more?). I still have it but never use since I got a MacBook. It's faster, a lot more powerful, and just more fun to use. The graphics are good and it comes with a suite of programs that let me do what I want, plus there are free programs available for all sorts of uses. I'm happy to pay more for the difference in quality and performance.

Okay, here it is: don't buy an Apple, it has a byte missing. Sorry, but that's my favorite joke. Anyway, don't buy an Apple, because 1) they are way too expensive 2) not as many independents work on them, meaning if you have a problem you will pay thru the nose to get it fixed 3) Apple is totally proprietary, meaning if you want to buy something for the computer, it will have to be an Apple or Apple-approved item, costing more $$$$.

Look at the Sony Vaio -- a lot more bang, for less bucks. I bought one a year ago, and have had ZERO problems. I don't like Vista, but nothing is perfect, and it is bright, shiny RED. With my Sony, I have all the necessary ports to plug in a monitor, keyboard and mouse -- making it a great desktop. Like almost all new computers, it has wireless internet built in.

Apple. They last a long time, come with great software, and are easy to use. Depends on what you want to do with it. Frankly, if you're just using the internet, an Apple is overkill. But I love mine. It's elegant and gorgeous (and fun!).

Right on, Chum. They're just so much more pleasant to use. None of that constant having to restart. The sleep function actually works, and wakes up quickly, unlike my Dell which was like trying to wake a drunk. The programs are intuitive and work well with the system, and if there are problems, Apple actually asks for a report from the system. It goes on...:-)

The computers I've owned have been Dell, Compaq, and HP. they have all been equally bad. Four years ago, I gave up on the PC. I have been a mac user ever since and I couldn't be happier. The big thing for me has been no viruses. No going to sleep for extended periods of time. There is no need to constantly reboot the system, like with a PC. No internet explorer, I use firefox. I have the same macbook I bought 4 years ago. I've had one repair and the service at the Apple store was top notch. The people working there could speak intelligently and clearly. There was no 1-800-bet you can't understand me number. My next computer will also be a mac.

                    Chum,

The genius bar is great. I made my service appointment online and I only had to show up

                    Lady Bug,

Don't assume that a mac is always more expensive. I did not buy a high-end model. I paid 999.00 plus tax for a small laptop and here it is four years and one repair later. They have made changes to this model. The new macbook is a little wider (mine is 13 inches), faster and has a larger hard drive. But the price is the same. Also if you log on to apple.com, they sell refurbished models that come with the same warranty as a brand new computer. It's a good way to be able to afford some of the pricier models. It's certainly worth an internet visit. Good Luck!
